9:15 AM - 11:15 AMZOOMFor our first Brotherhood Breakfast* of the season we are honored to welcome return speaker Yousef Bashir
Please note that we are requiring all attendees to pre-register for this ZOOM event (see below).
Yousef Bashir spoke at CBE in 2013 and 2014 while earning his MA at Brandeis University's Conflict Resolution and Coexistence (COEX) Program. As the current Director of Research & Operations at the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace, he is a tireless advocate for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and previously worked on Capitol Hill as a member of the Palestinian Diplomatic Delegation to the United States.
Yousef's path to this role started in September 2000 at the age of 11 when Israeli soldiers were shooting into his parents house in the Gaza strip. When the house was taken over for a command post, his father stated “I am a peaceful man. I am not your enemy. There is no need for me to leave. If it is not safe for us in our own home, then it will not be safe for us anywhere.” They did not leave while the house was occupied.
But when Yousef was fifteen he was shot in the back by an Israeli soldier. It was determined that a Gaza hospital could not properly help him and he was transferred to a hospital in Tel Aviv where he underwent a year of therapy. He came to understand that his life's goal would be to end the senseless violence. In addition, he came to believe that a majority of Americans, especially Jewish Americans, want their government to work toward peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Read Yousef's own words in Brandeis Magazine and in his 2019 Op-Ed in the New York Times (paywall). His book, The Words of My Father: Love and Pain in Palestine, was endorsed by The New Yorker Magazine: "At one of the darkest times in the elusive effort to end the conflict in the Middles East....a remarkable new memoir." He was interviewed in 2019 in JewishBoston.com.
